India-Vietnam Defence Ties to Strengthen with Joint Production and Trade Expansion Plans

India-Vietnam defence relationship takes a step forward, agreeing to explore joint production of military equipment, as per news reports. Strengthening supply chains, extending and widening opportunities for access to products from both countries is also an objective they share.
The decisions were taken during the 19th round of India-Vietnam Joint Commission Meeting in which External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Vietnamese Foreign Minister Le Hoai Trung reviewed cooperation across defence, trade, connectivity, nuclear energy and space.
Joint Production Added to Defence Cooperation
India and Vietnam identified co-production of Indian defence items as an area for deeper cooperation.
The discussions build on a Letter of Intent signed last year to strengthen defence industry ties, along with a framework for submarine search, rescue and support.
Trade Expansion Gets Equal Focus
The two sides also discussed investments and supply chains, while India is seeking wider market access in Vietnam for its marine products, agricultural goods and pharmaceuticals.
In May, India and Vietnam upgraded their relationship to an Enhanced Comprehensive Strategic Partnership and set a target of $25 billion in annual bilateral trade by 2030.
More Sectors Added to the Agenda
The latest meeting also covered port and air connectivity, nuclear energy, space, heritage conservation, seafarer standards, capacity building and people-to-people ties.
Jaishankar described Vietnam as an important partner for India's Act East Policy, MAHASAGAR vision and its Indo-Pacific outlook.
Regional Issues Also Discussed
The ministers exchanged views on developments in West Asia and the South China Sea. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to working together in regional and multilateral forums.
India continues to support peaceful resolution of South China Sea disputes and adherence to international law, including UNCLOS.
Conclusion
The latest India-Vietnam talks broaden the relationship beyond existing defence cooperation, with joint production and trade expansion now receiving greater attention. The $25 billion annual trade target by 2030 remains a stated objective of the enhanced partnership.
