T-Mobile and Jio Partner for World’s First 5G Standalone Roaming Between India and US

T-Mobile, the second-largest telecom service provider in the US, and IPO-bound Reliance Jio have launched 5G Standalone (SA) roaming between their networks. The companies announced the service on September 21, 2026. 

The service allows T-Mobile customers travelling in India to roam on Jio’s 5G SA network. Jio customers travelling to the US can similarly use T-Mobile’s 5G SA network. The connection is supported through interoperability provided by Syniverse. 

First 5G SA Roaming Connection 

The companies said the arrangement is the world’s first 5G Standalone roaming connection. Customers on both networks will receive 5G connectivity while roaming, rather than switching to another network technology. 

Jio and other Indian telecom operators already have 4G roaming agreements with international carriers. These services are generally offered through roaming packs. The latest arrangement brings 5G SA connectivity into roaming between India and the US. 

Focus on Connectivity 

According to T-Mobile, 5G SA roaming offers higher speeds, lower latency and more consistent connections. The company said these network capabilities can be used for applications including Internet of Things (IoT), real-time communications and immersive technologies. 

T-Mobile Chief Network Officer Ankur Kapoor said the company started working towards a 5G Standalone network in 2020. The latest agreement with Jio extends that network capability to international roaming. 

Role of Syniverse 

Syniverse is providing the interoperability between the two networks. John Wick, Chief Product Officer at Syniverse, said the company supported 5G-ready customers from the validation stage through production. 

The technology is also intended to support further cross-network services. Jio’s Head of International Network, Partnership and Services, Mark Yarkosky, said these could include consumer and enterprise services as well as AI-enabled applications.
