HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines Sign Final Contract to Develop and Produce Aravalli Helicopter Engine

Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) and Safran Helicopter Engines have signed a final contract with their joint venture, SAFHAL Helicopter Engines Pvt. Ltd., for the Aravalli helicopter engine programme. The disclosure was made through a filing dated August 26, 2026.
The contract covers the engine's design, development, manufacture, supply, and lifecycle support.
Engine Selected for IMRH and DBMRH
The Aravalli will be developed in the 3,500 to 4,000 shaft horsepower range. It has been selected for HAL's planned 13-tonne Indian Multi-Role Helicopter (IMRH) and its naval variant, the Deck-Based Multi-Role Helicopter (DBMRH).
The agreement was signed on August 26, 2026, in Bengaluru by Ajay Kumar Shrivastava, HAL's Director of Engineering, Research and Development, and Olivier Savin of SAFHAL Helicopter Engines and Safran Helicopter Engines.
SAFHAL to Work on the Programme
SAFHAL is a joint venture between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines SAS. The engine programme will bring together the capabilities of the two parent companies across design, manufacturing, testing, and product support.
The work will include advanced design methods, manufacturing processes, and comprehensive testing. The companies said the programme will also contribute to the development of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul capabilities in India.
Potential Civil Applications
The engine is being developed primarily for HAL's helicopter programmes, but the companies have also identified possible civil applications. These include offshore transportation, utility missions, and VVIP transport.
The programme follows earlier cooperation between HAL and Safran Helicopter Engines. Their work began with Artouste engines for the Cheetah and Chetak helicopters, followed by the Shakti engine family used in the Advanced Light Helicopter, Light Combat Helicopter and Light Utility Helicopter.
